Teacher unions have agreed to call off a strike action which they had threatened after a meeting with Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, which resolved longstanding concerns over the placement of teachers on their appropriate salary scales.
The engagement, held on Monday, addressed delays in implementing promotions within the Ghana Education Service (GES).
The teacher unions agreed to call off the strike actions following assurances and concrete measures.
Key among the resolutions is that teachers will no longer be required to travel to their respective District Education Offices to submit payslips for salary-scale placement as the process will instead be handled administratively.
Nearly 80,000 teachers are expected to be correctly placed on their salary scales as part of the agreement.
The Ghana Education Service will supply the necessary data to the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department to enable the required adjustments and payments.
The Ministry of Education expressed appreciation for the constructive approach taken by the leadership of the teacher unions, noting their commitment to resolving the matter in the interest of Ghana’s education system and the welfare of teachers.
Officials reaffirmed the Ministry’s determination to work with all relevant stakeholders to ensure teachers receive their rightful entitlements in a timely and efficient manner.
The agreement is expected to prevent disruption to teaching and learning while addressing a major source of frustration among promoted teachers who had been awaiting corresponding salary adjustments.
