The Member of Parliament for Tempane, Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba, has condemned two violent incidents that occurred within the constituency over the past 48 hours, describing them as deeply troubling and unacceptable.
In a statement dated Monday, November 3, 2025, the MP expressed outrage over the fatal shooting of two Immigration Officers at Nagani on November 2 and an alleged military assault on civilians in Basyonde the following day.
According to a police statement, the Immigration Officers were ambushed by unknown gunmen while returning from a foot patrol. The attackers reportedly shot at the officers and escaped with two AK-47 rifles belonging to the Ghana Immigration Service.
The victims were rushed to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, where one officer was pronounced dead on arrival while the other remains in critical condition.
Reacting to the incident, Mrs. Akanvariba extended her condolences to the bereaved family and the Immigration Service, calling the attack “a direct affront to the rule of law.”
However, she expressed equal concern over reports of a military operation in Basyonde on November 3, which allegedly resulted in the brutal assault of innocent residents.
“Reports indicate that, in the early afternoon, soldiers invaded this peaceful community-far from the site of the Nagani shooting incident and brutally assaulted innocent residents who were engaged in their normal daily activities.
Several individuals have sustained injuries, and the incident has instilled fear and insecurity in the hearts of my constituents,” she stated.
Mrs. Akanvariba described the alleged military actions as “unacceptable and unjustifiable,” stressing that while the state has a duty to ensure security, “it must not punish the innocent for the actions of a few.”
She urged the government, the Ghana Armed Forces, and all security agencies to conduct a transparent and urgent investigation into both incidents and to hold perpetrators accountable, whether civilians or members of the security services.
The MP further called for the restoration of trust and peace in the affected communities through lawful and transparent means.
“As your Member of Parliament, I assure you that your safety, dignity, and rights will always be my priority. I urge you all to remain calm and law-abiding while the authorities investigate these incidents thoroughly,” she said.
