Supporters of the largest opposition party New Patriotic Party (NPP) stormed the premises of the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, following the sudden arrest of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Tensions flared as dozens of loyalists chanted slogans, demanded his immediate release, and clashed verbally with security personnel, creating a chaotic scene at the entrance of the anti-graft agency.
According to credible sources, Mr. Antwi-Boasiako, who had earlier reported to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to assist with ongoing investigations, was taken into custody by EOCO officers upon exiting the CID premises on Tuesday, May 27.
The detention is reportedly connected to allegations involving illegal mining activities, including unauthorized operations within protected forest reserves. While the exact scope and nature of the investigation have not been officially disclosed, EOCO is believed to be pursuing further inquiries in relation to these allegations.
Mr. Antwi-Boasiako had previously turned himself in on Monday, in accordance with his bail conditions, and was directed to report back, which he duly complied with. However, following his engagement with the CID, EOCO operatives intervened and placed him under arrest.
His legal representatives have not yet made any public comment regarding the development, and EOCO has yet to issue an official statement outlining the reasons for his detention.
