President John Dramani Mahama has assured labor unions that his government will cut unnecessary spending and manage the economy responsibly.
Speaking at a meeting with union leaders at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment, he admitted that Ghana’s economy is in crisis and blamed the previous administration for their reckless financial management.
“Ghana is a crime scene because of how the economy was handled. The level of mismanagement is shocking,” President Mahama said.
He urged all Ghanaians, including government officials, to make sacrifices to help the country recover. “Even in the office of government machinery, we are ready to cut as much of our budget as needed. We all must tighten our belts,” he stated.
The president also appealed to the Labour Unions to be patient while the government works on fixing the economy. He promised that once the situation improves, wages and conditions for workers will also get better. “Right now, the meal is not enough, and even the cooking pot is leaking. But once we fix things, everyone will get their fair share,” he explained.
To ensure fairness in salaries, President Mahama announced plans to set up an independent employment committee that will decide the pay structure for all workers, from the president to laborers. He expressed his willingness to support fair salary increases once the economy stabilizes, “we are in this together.”
President Mahama further called on Ghanaians to see the year 2025 as a “year of correction” and work together to rebuild the economy. He promised that his administration would focus on reducing inflation and growing the economy to improve the standard of living for all.
