The Students Representative Council (SRC) at the University of Ghana, Legon, has assured students that it will reject the increment of the Residential Facility User Fees (RFUF) for traditional halls of residence.
The 20% hike has been ocassioned by “the increase in electricity tariffs” and “the need for proper maintenance of the facilities for students,” the university’s Public Affairs Directorate has explained.
President of the SRC, Maradona Adjei Yeboah, in a release on the matter, disclosed that government was no longer bearing the cost of electricity for students residing in the traditional halls, hence the need for the learners to foot their own bill.
Explaining the fees increment, the statement noted that the new enumeration will see the students pay GHC 500 more than the initial amount.
“This has brought a 20% increment in the residential fees which means that incoming level 100s are paying 3000 cedis instead of the previous 2,500 cedis, while continuing students will pay 1,500 cedis instead of 1,000 cedis for next semester,” UGSRC President, Maradona Yeboah wrote.
The student leader said he had called an emergency Executive Committee meeting with student leaders within the university to “discuss the matter and pursue it by all legal means”.
“The SRC has begun engagement with stakeholders to address the matter to see a possible reduction in the amount” amidst its determination “in manifesting the interest of students,” the statement partly read.
