The University of Ghana has suspended all social gatherings on campus following a resurgence of COVID-19 cases.
The directive, signed by Professor Rosina I. Kyerematen, Dean of Student Affairs, takes immediate effect as part of efforts to curb the spread of the virus within the university community.
The university has also reactivated its COVID-19 screening and triage protocols across all campus health facilities to help detect and manage cases early.
The suspension affects all student groups and associations, including the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), the Student Representative Council (SRC), Junior Common Rooms (JCRs), and departmental and school associations until further notice.
The Office of Student Affairs has stressed that the decision is necessary to protect the health and safety of students, staff, and the entire university community.
This follows an alert issued by the University’s Health Services Directorate on Monday, June 23, confirming new suspected and confirmed cases of COVID-19 on campus and its surrounding areas.
In response, university authorities are urging strict adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols, including the proper use of face masks, especially in enclosed or crowded spaces, frequent handwashing with soap under running water, or the use of alcohol-based sanitizers, and maintaining at least one metre of physical distance where possible.
The statement also cautioned against large gatherings and advised that all enclosed spaces, including lecture halls and offices, should be well-ventilated.
Individuals experiencing flu-like symptoms have been urged to stay home and seek medical attention promptly to help prevent further transmission of the virus.
Student leaders, hall authorities, and association patrons have been directed to comply fully with the measures, with the university urging collective responsibility to contain the spread of the virus.
The situation, according to management, will be monitored closely, with further updates to be communicated as necessary.
