Universal Merchant Bank has named Bernice Asabea Kissi Boateng as its new Group Head for Personal and Business Banking, a move signalling a renewed push to strengthen its position within Ghana’s competitive banking landscape.

The appointment forms part of the bank’s broader transformation drive, with a clear emphasis on building a high-performing leadership team and deepening its reputation as a customer-focused institution.

In her new capacity, Asabea will oversee key divisions including Commercial, SME, Consumer, and Prominence Banking. These units are central to the bank’s growth strategy, with expectations to drive market expansion, strengthen client relationships, and deliver tailored financial solutions across diverse customer segments.

She brings more than 20 years of experience across corporate, commercial, and investment banking, with a career marked by strong portfolio growth, complex deal execution, and leadership in structured and trade finance.

Before joining UMB, she held senior roles at Access Bank Ghana, where she served as Sector Head for Corporate Banking and later led Financial Institutions within the Investment Banking division, contributing significantly to business growth and major transactions.

Her professional journey also includes roles at GCB Bank, Bank of Baroda Ghana, and Intercontinental Bank Ghana, where she built expertise in operations, treasury management, and customer service.

An alumna of St. Rose’s Senior High School, Akwatia, she holds a BA in Social Sciences and a Commonwealth Executive MBA from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, alongside extensive professional training in finance and strategy.

Commenting on the appointment, Managing Director of UMB, Philip Oti-Mensah, stated, “This appointment reflects our clear intent to build a bank defined by exceptional talent, strong execution, and unmatched customer focus.
Bernice Asabea Kissi Boateng brings the leadership depth, commercial acumen, and strategic clarity required to accelerate growth across our Personal and Business Banking franchise.

As we intensify our transformation journey, we are assembling a leadership team capable of redefining industry standards and delivering a truly differentiated banking experience.”

The bank says the appointment is part of a wider effort to reinforce its competitive edge, improve service delivery, and unlock new growth opportunities across its core markets.
