The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has responded to a viral video involving an altercation between a member of its Dress Code Compliance Team and a Level 100 female student, describing the staff member’s conduct as “unacceptable.”
In a press statement issued on Thursday, July 3, 2025, the university disclosed that it had swiftly initiated an investigation to ascertain the facts of the incident, which gained widespread attention on social media.
“Having now confirmed the circumstances leading to the incident, the University wishes to emphasise unequivocally that the behaviour of the staff was unacceptable and condemns it outright,” the statement read.
UPSA reiterated that it holds the dignity and well-being of every student as paramount and reaffirmed that “no staff member has the right to mistreat any student under any circumstances.”
According to the release, the Vice-Chancellor of the University has personally apologised to the affected student and stressed the institution’s commitment to a respectful and professional campus environment. The officer involved has also issued a written apology, acknowledging the inappropriate behaviour. In response, the student has written to the University Management expressing regret for her own conduct.
To prevent a recurrence, UPSA management said it is reviewing its dress code enforcement protocols and will provide additional training to the Dress Code Compliance Team “to reinforce appropriate conduct while performing their duties.”
The university noted that its dress code policy is a key part of preparing students for the corporate world and is outlined clearly in the Student Handbook. It explained that the policy is not arbitrary but designed to instil values such as discipline, integrity, and professionalism.
“While UPSA remains steadfast in its commitment to uphold the dress code, the university assures all stakeholders that enforcement of the same will always be carried out with respect and civility, taking cognisance of due process,” the statement added.
UPSA reaffirmed its dedication to providing a safe, respectful, and professional learning environment for all students and staff and assured the public that the matter has been addressed holistically.
