An American Physician Assistant Christopher Nilsson has embarked on medical outreach program on some Island Communities in Ghana to provide free basic healthcare services.
Nilsson and his medical team led by Divine Mother and Child Foundation (DMAC), an NGO based in Koforidua, spent two days on the Island of Affram Plains South to provide primary healthcare to 11 Island Communities in Hliadzi Electoral Area.
The medical team diagnosed and treated most non-communicable diseases among the impoverished inhabitants struggling to have access to basic healthcare due to absence of health facility. Also ultra-scan services were provided with ear and nose infections diagnosed and treated.
Some Pregnant women and Children identified to have serious complications were stabilized and referred for further checks.
The Hliadzi Electoral area made up of Bumpata, Ahiatroga, Djognevia, Agbokpa and seven other communities on the Island have been without a health facility until last week when the community completed a building earmarked for a CHPs Compound.
According to the leaders of the communities, many inhabitants particularly pregnant women and children have been dying needlessly due to the absence of Health facility in the area.
Pregnant women in the area depend on a traditional birth attendant for delivery at the peril of their lives. A pregnant woman who gets complications during delivery had to be ferried on the Affram River in a local boat at night for several hours to Kwahu Tafo or Atibie Hospitals but unfortunately, most die on the way.
Assembly Member for Hliadzi Electoral Area, Atitsogbey Gideon, has appealed to the government to come to their aid.
