As part of the International Women’s week celebration, the Ghana Integrity Initiative has organised a workshop on corruption for female students from tertiary institutions in the Volta regional capital of Ho on Thursday, 12 March 2020.
The over 65 participants who were selected from the Evangelical Presbyterian University College, Ho Technical University, the University of Health and Allied Sciences, the Ghana Technology University College and some other institutions, were taken through different perspectives of corruption, the avenues available to report corrupt practices and the whistleblower act and essentially, the role of women in the fight against corruption.
The workshop which is on the theme: “Empowering young women to sustain the fight against corruption in Ghana”, is in line with the National Anti-Corruption Action Plan (NACAAP) adopted by government in the year 2010.
In an interview with journalists, the Program Manager of GII, Mrs. Mary Awelana Addah said the decision to engage the young women in the tertiary institutions is part of one of its projects being funded by Global Affairs.
She said, “the workshop would enable the young women to start to build capacity to ensure that they are empowered enough to stand in that gap to speak out, to denounce, reject and report corrupt behaviour when they see it on campus”.
Mrs. Addah added that the focus of the workshop is to get young women in the various tertiary institutions especially those in leadership position, who can create a greater impact in fighting corruption through influence on their constituents.
“The young women who are in leadership positions in the various tertiary institutions also have space and they have the constituency to engage. So, we believe that engaging them today will have a greater impact on young women leaders who are fighting corruption in the future,” she noted.
Participants were made to commit themselves to well-designed activities that would create awareness on their various campuses to highlight the need for all to stand against corruption in ensuring sustainable economic growth in the country.
