V/R NPP election: Contempt charge looms

The Volta Regional election vetting committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is likely to be charged with contempt of court for going ahead to organise last Saturday’s elections, despite a court injunction to halt the process.

A disqualified aspirant for the chairmanship slot George Kofi Boateng went to court to secure the injunction after he accused the vetting committee of wrongfully disqualifying him in the race for the position.

But the party claimed it had not been served a copy of the writ and went ahead with the elections which saw the former Regional Organiser of the New Patriotic Party Makafui Kofi Woanyah winning the position as new chairman.

The disqualified candidate Boateng told Starr News his lawyers are heading back to court to nullify the results.

According to him, the election was an “illegality, null and void” as far as the court order was concerned.

“I belong to a party which has a very laudable principle and doctrine, that’s respect for democracy and one of the tenets and elements of democracy is the rule of law and good governance. And so, I think that, that action is very bad; it is uncalled for and it undermines the principles of the rule of law,” he told Starr News.

The committee, he said lied for claiming they did not receive a copy of the writ.

“They are lying through their teeth because we have a proof of serving. They had been duly served,” he said as well as the electoral commission by the High Court registrar of Hohoe and the acting regional chairperson of the party.
