The Ghana Police Service has arrested three individuals in the Volta Region for allegedly impersonating public officials and committing online fraud.
The suspects — Gideon Awudi (25), Edem Soku (33), and Judith Soku (31) — were apprehended in separate operations across Sogakope, Dabala, Dzodze, and Penyi communities.
According to a statement by the Police on December 22, the suspects created fake social media accounts impersonating high-profile officials, including the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, and the Inspector-General of Police, to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.
The police further stated, “Further investigations revealed that the suspects are also involved in various cybercrimes, including mobile money fraud, credit card fraud, airtime sales fraud, and online marketplace scams across multiple social media platforms.”
The arrested individuals have been handed over to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) at CID Headquarters for further investigations and will be processed for court.
The Ghana Police Service urged the public to exercise caution when conducting online financial transactions, advising people to verify the authenticity of social media accounts they interact with.
