Vivo Energy Ghana, Licensee for the Shell Oil Marketing Company in the country has set an ambitious target of providing refresher training over 1,000 high risk commercial drivers.

The move is part of the company’s STOP, THINK & DRIVE campaign in partnership with the National Road Safety Authority, NRSA and some company’s namely; J.K. Horgle, S.O Frimpong and J.K Ahiadome transport.

In a speech read by Vivo Energy Ghana Supply and Distribution Manager, Reindoff Domey on behalf of MD, Kader Maiga, at the launch of the 2023 STOP, THINK & DRIVE ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN, Vivo Energy says it’s campaign is to create a culture of safe driving in the country thereby contributing towards the achievement of SDG goal 3.6.

“Our objective this year is to provide refresher defensive driving training for commercial drivers and motorcyclists across the country to build their capacity with the ultimate objective to improve road user behaviour and reduce the risks of involvement in road accident”, he told drivers at the Circle Neoplan Station

“We will be equipping participants with basic first aid skills in administering medical care to passengers in case of emergencies”, he added

Acting Director General, NRSA Ing. David Osafo Adonteng although commending commercial drivers for the drop in number accidents and casualties recorded says an attitudinal change could help drive the number down further.

“As of August 31, 2023, records from the MTTD of the Ghana Police Service shows 15,891 accidents, 10,367 injuries and 1,433 deaths have occured”, he revealed.

This is however a reduction from the 2022 figures for the same period.

Elinam Ahorgli who spoke on behalf on the transporters attributed the reduction to improve road safety engagements and expressed her gratitude to Vivo Energy Ghana for the STOP, THINK & DRIVE CAMPAIGN

This year’s campaign is expected to reach over 1,000 high-risk commercial drivers and motorcyclists across the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Western and Eastern Regions of Ghana.
