A growing wave of internal support is building for Ing. Edward Ekow Obeng Kenzo, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority (VRA), as staff across departments express strong confidence in his leadership and call for his confirmation as the substantive CEO.
Ing. Obeng Kenzo assumed the role on January 18, 2025, following a formal handover from outgoing CEO Emmanuel Antwi Darkwa. Since taking the helm, Ing. Kenzo, formerly the Deputy Chief Executive in charge of Engineering & Operations has been praised for his results-driven leadership, technical acumen, and steady handling of operational challenges.
Sources within the VRA highlighted Ing. Kenzo’s role in swiftly responding to the power crisis during the transition period. They emphasized that his actions, though tough, were necessary to prevent even greater environmental and structural risks. Staff familiar with the operation commended him for making timely decisions in a high-stakes environment, ensuring long-term safety and stability for communities along the Volta Lake.
“Kenzo is results-oriented. His leadership has brought stability to the operations of the VRA. He’s a technocrat who understands the inner workings of the VRA, and personally, I’m confident he is the right person to move the VRA forward,” said one staffer who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Another employee emphasized the need for continuity: “VRA needs a steady hand. It’s important to look beyond party politics for sensitive roles like this. Kenzo delivers on the job.”
Despite earlier mischaracterizations in some public commentary, several VRA Staff say Ing. Kenzo is respected for his fairness and professional standards. Senior staff have described him as a firm but inclusive leader who is ushering in a new culture of performance and accountability at the VRA.
“Mr. Kenzo challenges us to bring our best to the table. His standards are high, but that’s exactly what we need to move the Authority forward”, said a senior VRA official. “We are confident that under his guidance, VRA will continue to be a cornerstone of Ghana’s energy future.”

During a recent visit to the Anwomaso 1 Thermal Power Plant in Kumasi, Ing. Obeng Kenzo reiterated his commitment to revitalizing the VRA, urging all staff to rally behind the organization’s strategic vision. The engagement provided an open platform for both unionized and senior staff to voice concerns, share ideas, and contribute to a collective plan for institutional growth and employee development.
He underscored that every employee has a critical part to play in the VRA’s success.
“When each of us understands our contribution to the big picture, achieving our collective goals becomes much easier”, Ing. Kenzo said.
A key highlight of the visit was the announcement of government-approved expansion projects across several thermal plants. These projects, set to roll out soon, are expected to significantly increase Ghana’s electricity generation capacity, reinforcing the VRA’s leadership in national energy security.
