The President, John Dramani Mahama, has said the government remains focused on addressing critical socio-economic challenges affecting citizens other than discussions on LGBTQ+ issues.
Addressing attendees of a Presidential Dialogue with Civil Society Organisations at Jubilee House in Accra on Monday, March 30, the President called for constructive engagement in discussions concerning the anti-LGBTQ+ which to him is not Ghana’s most pressing need at the moment.
“We are still grappling with the provisions of basic needs of education, health care, jobs, food, clothing, and shelter,” he stated.
The President also emphasized the need for restraint in discussions on issues of LGBTQ+.
“While there are strong and differing views within our society, we believe that issues must be addressed through democratic processes, our core values, dialogue, and the rule of law,” he said.
President John Mahama, despite acknowledging the interests of external actors in the private member’s Bill, assured that Ghana will prioritise the provision of its basic needs above all other interests.
Ghana, he continued, will continue to balance its constitutional principles with its cultural context while maintaining constructive relations globally.
