President John Dramani Mahama says his administration would implement a comprehensive ban on the issuance of mining licenses for mining in all forest reserves as part of efforts to safeguard the nation’s environment.
“It shall be the policy of this government to ban the issuance of licenses for mining in all forest reserves. We will promptly revoke any such licenses granted under the previous administration”, the President stated.
The President’s announcement comes in response to the increasing concerns over the impact of mining activities, particularly illegal small-scale mining, often referred to as galamsey, on the country’s natural reserves and water bodies.
Mahama categorically denied recent reports suggesting that his government had authorized any new mining operations in these protected areas.
“I want to state categorically that this government has not given any person or group of persons permission to engage in mining within our forest reserves. I urge the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, as well as the Ministers of Interior, Justice, and the Attorney General, to take immediate steps to ensure the arrest and prosecution of any individuals or groups found engaging in such illegal activities”, Mahama emphasized.
The President also issued a stern warning to members of his government, making it clear that involvement in small-scale mining or galamsey would not be tolerated. “No member of this government is permitted to engage in any form of small-scale mining. Those found guilty of breaching this policy will face swift and severe sanctions.”
