The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has served notice of its intention to continue with the arrest and prosecution of all former appointees allegedly involved in corruption and related acts.
This follows a clarion call by the largest opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine to avoid the public commentary and proceed with the prosecution of cases in court if he has any evidence.
But speaking to Tutuwaa Danso on Starr Today, Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency, Mustapha Foyo Gbande stated that the Mahama-led government will ensure former appointees accused of corruption are held accountable.
“Within the framework of individuals involved, those who need to be arrested, properly investigated, and charged should be brought before the court. In today’s democracy, the people of Ghana have called on the government to ensure that those suspected of wrongdoing are held accountable. There is a need for the Attorney General to regularly brief and update the public on ongoing matters. However, if the Attorney General publicly upholds the presumption of innocence and presents the facts gathered so far, there should be no need for a press conference.”
“Some colleagues are being lazy, failing to take responsibility, and seem not to understand their role in the opposition. Just because Akufo-Addo is no longer President, they feel the need to make noise about everything. But let me be clear: if Richard Ahiagba, or anyone else, is implicated in criminal activities in the future, press conferences will not prevent lawful investigations. No amount of noise should subvert or seek to interfere with the proper legal processes in this country.”
