Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has commenced the controlled spillage of the Weija Dam due to rising water levels resulting from recent rains. The measure is a proactive step to prevent potential structural failure of the dam, which could endanger lives and property downstream.
In a letter dated April 7, 2025, and addressed to the Managing Director of GWL, the Regional Chief Manager, Charles Tulashie, explained that the Weija Dam is gradually experiencing a rise in water levels, necessitating immediate action. The letter was officially received by the Ga South Municipal Assembly on April 10.
“With the onset of the rains, the Weija Dam is gradually experiencing a rise in water levels. Any attempt to commence immediate controlled spilling may result in compromising the structural integrity of the dam, posing a significant risk to lives and properties,” the statement read.
GWL indicated that the spillage would begin at a low rate to minimize downstream effects and would continue as long as water levels remain high. The amount of water released will depend on the volume of inflow into the dam.
“This is to safeguard the dam from any possible collapse,” Tulashie noted, while expressing regret for any inconvenience the spillage might cause.
Residents living in low-lying areas around the dam are advised to stay alert and cooperate with authorities as efforts are made to manage the situation and prevent flooding-related disasters.
