The Ghana Police Service in the Western Region has arrested three persons and impounded two Kia trucks loaded with substances suspected to be cannabis.
The vehicles, bearing registration numbers GE 8965-12 and GS 3368-17, were intercepted around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Assorku Barrier in the Shama Municipality and later at Nkroful Junction.
According to the Western Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, officers on duty at the Assorku Barrier stopped a truck travelling from the Accra highway towards Takoradi. The vehicle was loaded with bags concealed under sawdust and containing substances suspected to be Indian hemp. While three occupants fled the scene, one suspect was arrested.

The arrest led to a follow-up operation at Nkroful Junction, where a second truck carrying similar substances was intercepted.
In total, police retrieved 152 large bales from the two vehicles. Each bale is said to contain about 80 compressed parcels wrapped in yellow packaging and suspected to be Indian hemp.
Two additional suspects, Kwabena Forson, 55, and Isaac Kwame Kontor, 44, were later arrested after they allegedly attempted to bribe officers with GH₵69,000 to secure the release of Moses Kweku Tawiah, 44, who had earlier been apprehended at the Assorku Barrier. The officers reportedly rejected the bribe and proceeded to arrest the two men.
Superintendent Adiku indicated that investigations are ongoing and the suspects will be arraigned before court if found culpable.
She also cautioned individuals involved in drug trafficking to desist, stressing that security personnel remain vigilant across the region. She commended the officers for their professionalism, noting that their alertness prevented the large consignment from being transported beyond Ghana’s borders.
