A crowd of women at Kandin, a far flung village in Tatale -Sanguli district of the Northern Region, held a special celebration after the school building for their children which had been left abandoned for more than seven months was renovated by Member of Parliament for the area, Tampi Acheampong Simon.

The six-unit basic classroom block was destroyed by a rainstorm forcing a large number of the school children to stay at home and the few remaining others studying under trees.

The building had had it entire roof ripped off by the strong winds and left the pupils to study under difficult environments for the whole academic period last term, headmaster of the school confirmed.

Several calls to the district assembly and education authorities did not yield any favourable response forcing the worried local chief to seek the intervention of the Member of Parliament.

When the MP visited the village to handover the renovated classroom block, a women came out in their numbers to stage a dancing funfair in a show of gratitude. The chief and his elders also appeared to show appreciation.

A resident explained to Starr News that the display by the women was uncommon and unusually stage when the community is rejoicing or in joyful moments.

“Exactly a full term we were under the trees and the MP came just a month a go and is able to roof it to a very fantastic point”, the headmaster, Bitimenam Bight Wumbei said at the handing over ceremony.

“It will help in so many ways. One, it will improve our academic excellence; increase our enrollment looking at this building and compare to the old building, this thing has been looked differently. Even as i speak, children have the courage to enjoy the facility than the old one”.

The chief commended the MP for the swift intervention and appealed for more basic amenities to reduce the suffering of his people. He also mentioned other interventions by the MP in the community including the donation of a motorcycle to staff of the health facility and offered more appreciation.

“We asked that our school has been ripped off by the rainstorm, and its a big.
mighty block, and the community could not do anything. So the MP immediately responded. And he has put the building in a good shape now even better than before and the children are very happy, learning and teaching going well very well and the chief, on behalf of the community, is thanking the MP and asking him to do more”, the chief said through an interpreter.

The MP, a former teacher, who was also distributing thousands of exercise books and writing materials to the deprived children, said the gestures was to lessen burdens on parents in educating their children.

The MP said he was troubled when the chief informed him about the situation and that moved him to deliver the swift intervention. He challenged the people to take care of the facility and promised to continue supporting them towards the provision of education and other social amenities.

“I’m committed to providing support to every community across the constituency, so without much ado, I officially handover the renovated classroom block to the chief and elders of Kandin , to be used for teaching and learning purpose.”

Some women who spoke to Starr News said they were elated because their children would have the opportunity again to study under decent and safe environment. They thanked the MP for the gesture.
