An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail to Wontumi FM presenter, Emmanuel Kwakye Asare, after he spent two weeks in police custody over allegations of spreading false news.
Asare was arrested on August 12, 2025, and charged with one count of offensive conduct following comments on his radio programme in which he claimed that President John Dramani Mahama had prior knowledge of the August 6 helicopter crash that killed eight people.
The court approved bail in the sum of GH₵100,000, with two sureties who must be civil servants. His lawyers are currently finalising the processes to secure his release.
The prosecution strongly opposed the bail application, citing ongoing investigations.
However, Presiding Judge Samuel Bright Acquah ruled that there was no basis to deny bail, though he referenced judicial precedence from a case where a man was once remanded for insulting then-President Akufo-Addo.
Asare is expected to reappear before the court on September 1, 2025, as the case proceeds.
