The King and Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari II, has commended the Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, for his renewed efforts to tackle illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

He cited his strong focus on community engagement and his drive to ensure the mining sector delivers greater benefits to Ghanaians

The commendation came when the Minister paid a courtesy call on the King of Dagbon at the Gbewaa Palace as part of his tour of mining areas in the Northern enlave.

Welcoming the Minister, Yaa Naa Abukari II expressed appreciation for the government’s early actions in the sector.

“We have followed your early initiatives with great appreciation, particularly your renewed and decisive commitment to combating galamsey, your strong focus on community engagement, and your drive to ensure the mining sector delivers greater benefits to the Ghanaian people.”

The Overlord also expressed confidence in the Minister’s ability to replicate past successes in other sectors, especially in protecting Ghana’s natural resources.

“Just as you secured Ghana’s energy future, we are confident that you will bring the same bold leadership to securing our land tenure systems, effectively regulating mining, and safeguarding our environment for generations yet unborn.”

Responding, the lands minister expressed gratitude for the warm reception and reaffirmed his commitment to the fight against illegal mining, describing Dagbon as a place close to his heart.

“I’m very grateful for the warm reception. Dagbon will always be my second home. My King, I’m here for your blessings as we are in the region touring mining sites in our quest to combat illegal mining, and I know you are already a champion in the fight.”

The visit forms part of government’s broader efforts to strengthen collaboration with traditional authorities in the fight against galamsey, which continues to pose a major threat to Ghana’s environment and water bodies.
