Konor of Yilo Krobo not destooled – Royal Family warns against political interference

The Nuer Royal Family of Yilo Krobo has dismissed claims that the Konor has been destooled.

The Nuer Royal Family of Yilo krobo traditional area have accused some political actors, including the sitting Member of Parliament for the area, Albert Tetteh Nyarkotey, of allegedly abusing political powers to interfere in the traditional governance of Yilo Krobo, warning that the politicisation of the sacred stool poses a serious threat to peace and stability.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, the Royal Family alleged political influence behind the ongoing agitations and purported attempts to destool the Konor, Nene Oklepeme Nuer Anobah Sasraku II.

The family emphasized that “It has come to the attention of the Nuer Royal Family that certain external political actors are alleged to be actively influencing and encouraging the current agitation by some Divisional Chiefs against the Konor of Yilo Krobo. Specifically, we have received credible reports that the current Member of Parliament for the area, together with persons closely associated with him, have made statements indicating an intention to use political power to interfere with the stool of Yilo Krobo”.

The Royal Family stressed that neither the Konor nor the Nuer Royal Family engages in partisan politics and warned that they would not submit traditional authority to political coercion.

“Traditional stools must not become casualties of political rivalry. When politics enters the palace by force, peace leaves the community,” the statement cautioned.

Citing rising tension and the alleged involvement of political actors, the Royal Family formally called on the Government of Ghana, particularly President John Dramani Mahama, to intervene to help de-escalate the situation and protect the sanctity of traditional authority.

A group of sub-chiefs recently performed rituals claiming to have destooled the Konor for breach of customs and tradition.

Reacting to the allegations, the Royal Family detailed a series of actions it described as customarily invalid and procedurally defective.

The family insisted that under Krobo custom, Divisional and Sub-Divisional Chiefs have no authority to distool a Konor, cancel oaths of allegiance, appoint an acting president of a traditional council, or perform rituals intended to “unmake” a Paramount Chief.

According to the Royal Family, none of the recognised customary dispute-resolution mechanisms were followed. These include first seeking audience with the Konor, referring grievances to the Royal Family as kingmakers, engaging neutral elders for mediation, or consulting sister paramountcies.

“What has been done constitutes a gross violation of customary law and a dangerous precedent,” the statement said.

Rejection of Elder-Led Mediation

The Royal Family further revealed that respected elders of the community, including Brigadier Akpatsu, Air Commander Wayo, Mr. Desmond Afutu and Mr. Sam Quarshie, attempted to mediate the dispute in good faith. However, these efforts were allegedly ignored and rejected by the agitating parties.

This, the Royal Family argued, demonstrated that the actions were not motivated by genuine grievances but by ulterior intentions incompatible with tradition and peace.

Rituals, Renunciation Claims and Kuntu Clarified

Addressing claims that the Konor had failed to perform stool rituals, cursed divisional chiefs, or interfered with divisional rites, the Royal Family described such allegations as false and malicious. It maintained that the Konor has consistently performed required rituals since his installation and continues to do so in accordance with custom.

Claims that the Konor renounced the stool were also dismissed as deliberate misrepresentation. According to the statement, remarks cited as evidence of renunciation were made in a Christian context and never intended as an abdication of traditional authority.

The Royal Family also clarified issues surrounding the Paramount Kuntu, stating unequivocally that it remains intact, preserved and under the sole authority of the Paramount Stool, not any divisional authority.

Linguist Controversy and Oaths of Allegiance

On the controversy involving a linguist who performed rituals at a lorry station, the Royal Family stated that the individual was not the senior State Linguist by original right and that his authority flowed directly from the Konor. By renouncing service to the Konor, the statement said, he had effectively ceased to hold that office.

The purported cancellation of oaths of allegiance through roadside rituals was described as invalid and unknown to custom.

Konor Remains in Office

In its final declaration, the Royal Family emphatically stated that the Konor has not been destooled, the stool of Yilo Krobo is not vacant, and the Konor remains the legitimate Paramount Chief.

The statement urged all parties to desist from further actions capable of destabilising the area and return to due process.

“The Royal Family will defend its inheritance. Tradition will be preserved. Peace must prevail,” it concluded.
