The Member of Parliament (MP) for Daffiama, Bussie-Issa Constituency in the Upper West Region, Dr. Sebastian Sandare, has called on Ghanaians to accept the vaccination plans outlined by the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
Speaking to Lily Mohammed on the Morning Starr Wednesday, the MP said the government should not surprise Ghanaians with interventions, rather they must be made to know reasons for the interventions.
According to the MP, the limitation of rights on vaccination are not forever adding that “though it’s not comfortable we have to understand and comply.”
“Vaccination is the greatest weapon. So this measure is to ensure that those within the country are fully vaccinated and those coming in are also vaccinated. Proof of a negative test is not enough. There are so many weapons we are using to fight Covid globally. Aside from all the measures, the greatest weapon that we have is vaccination,” the MP indicated.
The government has introduced new measures at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) and internally as part of efforts to get more Ghanaians vaccinated against COVID-19.
According to the Ghana Health Service (GHS), unvaccinated persons would be prevented from accessing certain public spaces such as stadia, entertainment event grounds among others during this year’s Christmas season.
On the issues concerning Human rights and vaccination the Mr. Sandare disclosed that “you don’t have rights when you are dead. It’s a way to ensure that as a people and a country, we are safe.”
“I don’t like measures that are reactive. You should first educate the public. But because the benefit outweighs the risks, Ghanaians should try and cope for the collective interests of others. It’s all in the interest of the country’s public health and protecting citizens of this country. Human rights are important but when it comes to a pandemic like this, certain measures will have to be taken.
“Most of the positive cases come from the KIA. If we have a channel of entering Ghana, then you want to block where the threat is. We need to make sure those coming in do not pose a threat to those of us who are resident in Ghana,” he emphasized.
