The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed suggestions that former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia poses a political threat to the party, insisting it remains confident in its electoral strength and national appeal ahead of the next general elections.
This follows Dr. Bawumia’s re-election as flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), where he secured 56.48 per cent of the total valid votes cast, defeating four other contenders.
Speaking to Natalie Fort on Starr Today, NDC Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Gbande described Dr. Bawumia as a weak candidate who lacks the credibility to win a general election.
Gbande stressed that the NDC remains united, disciplined, and focused on a shared national vision. According to him, the party has rebranded itself around a common purpose marked by order and internal cohesion.
“The NDC is a collective party. We are focused and have rebranded ourselves around a unified purpose, anchored in discipline and order. Ghanaians should not permit any form of disorderliness or indiscipline to get close to Jubilee House or the presidency.
That must not happen. We believe President Mahama is championing a new era of governance — one grounded in transparency, modesty, simplicity, and, above all, deliverables and results.”
He contrasted this with what he described as unacceptable conduct in political spaces, arguing that the NDC does not tolerate personal attacks or behaviour that undermines the dignity of leadership. Gbande said Ghanaians would not reward indiscipline or allow what he termed “disorderly politics” to influence governance at the highest level.
Gbande further stated that former President John Dramani Mahama is leading what he described as a new era of governance built on transparency, modesty, simplicity, and measurable results.
He maintained that this approach is restoring public confidence in political leadership.
“At no point should the current NPP be used as a benchmark to determine who poses a political threat and who does not — not at all. No political group in Ghana should be permitted to repeat even a fraction of what President Akufo-Addo, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and the present NPP administration have done to the country.
Under no circumstance should that be allowed. We in the NDC understand that Ghanaians have placed their trust in the system, and we recognise our responsibility to deliver. President Mahama is leading that effort.”
Dismissing comparisons with the NPP, he argued that no political tradition should be allowed to repeat what he described as the failings of the Akufo-Addo administration.
He said the NDC recognises its responsibility to deliver for Ghanaians and intends to seek a renewed mandate based on what he described as evidence of performance and lessons learned from past governance.
Gbande concluded that the NDC remains, in his view, the strongest alternative for effective governance in Ghana.
