24-Year-Old Nigerian breaks World Record for longest soccer video game marathon

Oside Oluwole, a 24-year-old Nigerian man, has shattered the world record for the longest marathon playing a soccer video game, clocking an impressive 75 hours of continuous gameplay. Known by his gaming alias “Khoded,” Oside significantly surpassed the previous record of 50 hours set by Englishman David Whitefoot in 2022.

Oside, a biochemist by training and currently working as a car dealer, embarked on this grueling challenge to raise funds for a local hospital in his hometown of Ijebu Ode. Unlike his predecessors who played either FIFA or Pro Evolution Soccer, Oside chose to play the mobile game Dream League Soccer 2023 on his iPhone, which he connected to a TV screen.

A passionate fan of Dream League Soccer since 2016, Oside played over 500 matches during his record attempt. According to the official rules for “longest marathon” records, he was allowed to accumulate five minutes of rest for every hour of gameplay, using these breaks to eat, nap, or use the restroom.

Reflecting on his achievement, Oside said, “I really enjoyed myself playing for 75 hours straight with just some hours of rest. It wasn’t an easy task, but I must say it was all fun. It was such a great moment; the event was very interesting and I’m grateful to God that it was successful.”

Upon completing his record-breaking feat, Oside received accolades from various quarters, including Hon. Seun Adesanya, a member of the Ogun State House of Assembly. In a press release, Adesanya praised Oside’s dedication and determination, stating, “The Guinness World Records [title] is a testament to Mr. Oluwole’s dedication, determination, and the countless hours of practice he invested in mastering the game. His achievement stands as an inspiration to all aspiring gamers and an embodiment of the unyielding spirit of determination that drives our nation.”

This remarkable achievement has set a new benchmark, with Oside’s record being the most significant improvement since the marathon was first set at 24 hours in 2010. Inspired by Chef Hilda Baci’s record-breaking cook-a-thon last year, Oside now aims to set additional world records through playing soccer video games, including on consoles such as FIFA and PES series.
