President John Dramani Mahama has called for the United Nations Charter to remain the supreme framework governing international relations, warning against a world order in which “might makes right” determines how nations behave.
Addressing the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Thursday, September 24, 2026, President Mahama said the principles of the UN Charter must guide the conduct of states and shape the international system.
He said the world must reject unilateralism and the notion that military or economic power should determine what is acceptable in international affairs.
According to President Mahama, respect for international law, the sovereignty of states and the principles underpinning the UN Charter are essential to maintaining a rules-based international order.
He stressed that the possession of veto power at the United Nations Security Council must not become a licence for impunity.

“Veto power must never serve as a licence for impunity,” President Mahama said, calling for the same standards of accountability and protection of civilians to apply to all parties in conflicts.
He also called for consistency in the application of international law, particularly regarding war, the protection of civilians and accountability for violations.

President Mahama said the international community must uphold the UN Charter rather than allow unilateral actions and the principle of “might makes right” to dictate global affairs.
