$2M Sky Train case: Ex-GIIF board chairman Prof. Ameyaw-Ekumfi’s plea deferred

The High Court in Accra has been forced to defer for the second time the plea taking of former Board Chairman of Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Ekumfi.

Prof. Ameyaw-Ekumfi was charged alongside Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Solomon Asamoah with six counts, including willfully causing a financial loss of $2 million to the state.

On May 13, 2025, the two were charged, but while the former CEO pleaded not guilty, Prof. Ameyaw-Ekumfi was absent due to ill health.

The court, presided over by Justice Comfort Tasiame, initially adjourned the case to May 20 for Prof. Ameyaw-Ekumfi’s plea to be taken.

However, when the case was called, Prof. Ameyaw-Ekumfi’s lawyers, led by Duke Aaron Sasu, informed the court that their client had been rushed to the Emergency Ward at the University of Ghana Medical Centre at dawn.

Counsel stated, “We were informed this dawn that the second accused has been rushed to the emergency ward of the University of Ghana Medical Centre.”

The prosecution, led by Deputy Attorney General Dr. Justice Srem Sai, did not oppose the adjournment but indicated that they would make further submissions on how to proceed with the case against Prof. Ameyaw-Ekumfi.

Dr. Srem Sai said, “My lady was true to the record when my lady said that it appears the second accused person is always rushed to the hospital in the morning of the proceedings.

“We do not want to impute anything except to say that the next adjourned date is not far, and when it comes, we will make a prayer to my lady on how the prosecution intends to move forward with the second accused person.”

The Court presided over by Justice Tasiame observed that Prof. Ameyaw-Ekumfi seemed to only get rushed to the hospital whenever he was scheduled to appear in court, a pattern observed in the previous court sitting.

According to EIB Network’s Legal Affairs Correspondent, Solomon Asamoah, the former CEO of Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) and first accused in the Sky Train case, remains in lawful custody because he has not been able to meet his bail conditions.

Asamoah was granted bail in the sum of GH¢15 million with two sureties required to justify their bail with landed property in Accra.

The case has been adjourned to May 26.
