A family at Kwasi-Komfo a community in the East Akim Municipality in the Eastern region is fighting the Kibi Government Hospital over the “mysterious” death of a 37-year-old woman, Agnes Asiedua, who died barely seven hours after delivery.

Asiedua died at the Kibi Government Hospital after delivering twins, a male and female through Caesarean Section.

The news of the death of Asiedua shocked her octogenarian father who also died after hearing the death of his daughter.

According to the family, the cause of death of Asiedua still remains a mystery because hospital officials are not forthcoming with the autopsy report.

But the bereaved family suspect medical negligence led to the death of Asiedua.

The twins are currently being cared for by Sister of the deceased.

The poor family is, however, struggling to afford baby food to take care of the twins hence appealing to philanthropists for help.

The widower, Richard Osei, in an interview with Starr News said his late wife was fit and even walked from the village before boarding a vehicle to the Hospital to deliver.

He added that he is shocked by his wife’s death hence appealing to officials of the Ghana Health Service and the Member of Parliament for the Area Hon. Atta Akyea to intervene.

Mr. Osei narrated to Starr News that if nurses at the facility had paid attention to his wife after she delivered she would have still been alive.

When Starr News visited the Hospital, the Medical Director was not available but a Doctor confirmed the incident but added that the Medical Director will be available to address the allegations on Thursday.

A total of thirty (30) institutional maternal deaths were recorded in the Eastern Region between January to May this year. The figure according to starr News sources has gone up.

Though the figure is a reduction from 44 and 40 recorded for the same period in 2017 and 2016 respectively.

In 2017, a total of 109 maternal deaths were recorded in the region which was analysed that at least 9 pregnant women died every month in the Region.Audit report on the deaths indicated that 80% of the deaths were preventable.

The Acting Eastern Regional Director of Ghana Health, Dr.Antobre Boateng told Starr News that the cases of maternal mortality recorded this year though a reduction as compared to previous years,is still not acceptable therefore further efforts are being done to minimize the menace.

According to him 61% of the causes of the maternal deaths are bleeding and hypertension.

The death of a 21-year-old pregnant woman and her triplets died at the Koforidua Regional Hospital over alleged negligence on the part of the midwives has equally raised eyebrow with a call on GHS to take a second look into the high maternal deaths in the region.
