The Metropolitan Chief Executive for Cape Coast, Ernest Arthur has called for a concerted effort in halting the spread of coronavirus in the area.
He explains that the virus can only be defeated if residents joined hands with the metro assembly and the Ghana Health Service.
He emphasized that residents’ adherence to the laid down protocols by government and the Ghana Health Service will indeed help in addressing the COVID-19 spread.
The metropolis since the break out of the disease has recorded 19 out of the 154 cases that the central region in general has recorded.
The first case of the virus in the metropolis was recorded on April 8, when a 56-year- old clergy who had returned to the country a fortnight before the closure of the country’s boarders was found to have started exhibiting the symptoms of COVID-19.
This pushed the metro assembly to intensify its measures at public places especially markets as over 2,000 Veronica Buckets and 5,000 face masks are distributed to residents to improve sanitary conditions in the area.
Markets and the other strategic locations in the metropolis also had Veronica Buckets stationed to improve hand washing in such areas.
Presenting another set of 2,000 facemasks to market women, taxi drivers, barbers among others in Cape Coast, the mayor Ernest Arthur, appealed to the beneficiaries to make good use of the face masks as the nature of their activities could easily trigger further spread of the virus.
He explained that the trade of the beneficiaries bring them into contact with all manner of persons necessitating that the best of care is taken to halt the potential spread of the virus.
He admonished the drivers especially to go by the protocol of reducing the number of passengers as that measure will also reduce bodily contacts which could potentially lead to the spread of the virus.
Ernest Arthur assured of the metro assembly’s commitment in ensuring that the disease is rooted out of the metropolis so that the normalcy could return to the metropolis to boost livelihood.
‘ We will continue to provide the hand sanitizers , veronica buckets , face masks and other PPEs to residents and health facilities to improve health conditions in the area. Residents must also play their part by going by the laid down protocols so we all help in ridding the metropolis of the virus”. he added.
