The Minority in Parliament has said the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) owes examiners, invigilators and supervisors in the 2022 examination.
Speaking to Starr News, the ranking member on the Education Committee in Parliament, Peter Nortsu-Kortoe advised the government to pay WAEC as soon as possible.
According to him, the government must attach some level of urgency with the matter since Ghana risked losing the Headquarters status over the huge debts owed to the examination body.
“The Ghana Office especially is starved of funds by the government. WAEC is owing examiners, its owning invigilators, its oweing supervisors for the conduct of 2022 West Africa Certificate Examination. They have not paid them. They are owing well over 40 million Ghana cedis.
“Now, the 2023 examination has started and we don’t know how soon the government will release money to WAEC. To enable it to carry out this obligation or conduct the examinations for that of BECE that will start on 7th August 2023,” Mr. Nortsu-Kortoe.
He continued: “So my appeal to the Ministry is that if we don’t want to lose the recognition of being the Headquarters of WAEC then we should be in the position to regularly remit funds to WAEC to enable it meet its obligation to those who provide services to it.”
