First in his family to enter university; blind student pleads for funds to pay fees

A visually impaired student; the first in his family to gain admission to a tertiary institution has his hopes in a fix; unable to raise 6,200 cedis to pay his admission fees to the University of Education Winneba.

Alhasan Shaibu, a resident of Obuasi, has been offered a place at the Faculty of Applied Behavioral Science in Education to pursue a four year Bachelor of Education course in Special Education.

The graduate of the Okuapeman Senior High School is however yet to celebrate his admission after bracing the odds of blindness to make it to the tertiary institution

He is required to pay an amount of Ghc2292 for his first year fees and GHc4700 for a residential facility user fee.

This cost is aside upkeep money, books and cost of transportation to and within the school located in the Central Region.

With the support of his mother, a single mum who hawks cocoa drink to sustain the family, he has been able to raise Ghc700 to cover the 30% initial fees required to demonstrate acceptance of admission ahead of registration.

With School reopening on 6th January 2024 and registration beginning on 8th January 2024; Alhasan’s fear of missing this opportunity to further his education is heightening.

Speaking to Ultimate News’ Ivan Heathcote – Fumador after travelling on his own from Obuasi to Kumasi in search of assistance, he indicated that he had sent letters to the Obuasi Municipal Assembly and mining giant AngloGold Ashanti but was yet to receive any tangible support.

“My father is not alive. My mother sells cocoa tea in a school. She is worried her job cannot raise that kind of money to help me go to school.”

IF I had eyes I would have gone working hard to help raise money to support myself. But I cannot do that now,” he bemoaned.

Alhasan pointed out that education provided him the only avenue to become socio-economically empowered to live a decent independent life without burdening his family.

“I don’t want to be a burden on my family and the society. After school, I could qualify to get a job to earn me some money. Other persons who don’t face my challenges can go hawking or doing menial jobs to fend for themselves but not me,” he lamented.

Alhasan’s zeal to step out of home, defying his visual impairment, in search of financial assistance to make it to the university demonstrates a youth burning with the passion and zest to succeed regardless of his disability.

His plea is for the public to support him with the funds he needs to enter university as the first in his family to receive admission to a tertiary education; to concentrate on his studies and plough his own furrow after school.
