Flag bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama has promised that his next administration will establish a cashew factory in the Bono East Region.
The former President stated that this initiative is part of the party’s industrialization strategy within its 24-Hour Economic Policy, aimed at creating jobs and promoting economic growth.
Speaking during a community engagement at the Amoma DA Primary School in the Kintampo South District as part of his four-day campaign tour, John Mahama explained that the project would be implemented through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP)
Mr. Mahama pledged to support local processing and export, ensuring that farmers receive a fair share of the profits. “So, mainly in Bono East Region, we are going to look for people to construct a Cashew factory. So every year cashews will be sold beautifully. We’ll increase the price so that Cashew farmers will also get their share.”
He continued, “How we do cocoa, the same thing will be done for Cashew. When it’s time to harvest cocoa, the government will announce the producer price of cocoa, which means the farmers will know how to sell a bag of cocoa; the same will be done for Cashew.”
Former President emphasized prices will be announced pertaining to the cashews, which would help farmers be aware of what they will earn. “When it is almost time for the harvest of cashews, we’ll announce the price so that the farmers will be aware of how much money they will earn.”
“We’ll let the factory sell and prepare well so that we can export to other countries. As I’m talking, Indians came to buy our cashews. They’ve sent it to India to prepare and make it nice. They send it abroad to earn dollars and give Ghanaians just a small amount, but that will end.” Mahama noted that Ghanaians will own their own cashew factory and exports to other countries.
The goal is to empower farmers to earn a decent income and improve their livelihoods. “It’ll help the farmers earn money to cater for their life.”
