Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, Member of Parliament for Builsa South, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure the credibility of Ghana’s voter register.
In a recent response on X (formerly Twitter), Dr. Apaak questioned the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) reluctance to support the cleanup of the bloated register.
“Why would a party threaten an institution if it does the right thing: cleans a bloated register?” Dr. Apaak asked. “Why would the NPP not be interested in a clean and fit for purpose register?”
He pointed out that the NPP’s posture confirms that they, along with the EC’s Chair, Jean Mensah (DMB), are the ultimate beneficiaries of the bloated register. Dr. Apaak cited evidence adduced by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), stating that “any fair-minded and honest person would come to the conclusion that the register in its current form is not credible.”
“The register cannot be fit for purpose,” Dr. Apaak emphasized. “The EC, as a public institution established by the Constitution, has an obligation to ensure that we have a credible register. This credibility can only be established by an independent audit.”
He concluded, “Therefore, the EC must do the right thing by allowing an independent audit of the register.”
Notably, the EC has maintained that the 2024 voter register is “robust and credible” . However, Dr. Apaak’s concerns highlight the need for transparency and accountability in the electoral process.
