Speaker of the Parliament, Alban Bagbin has announced that the much awaited recall of the House will be on December 16, 2024, nine days after the general election.
In a notice released by his office and addressed to lawmakers and the general public, the speaker said he was acting on the Standing Orders of Parliament which grants him the right to recall the legislature for sitting.
Order 58 (4) provides that: “The Speaker shall summon Parliament within a period determined by the Speaker and the requirement for a fourteen-day notice shall not apply when there is an emergency.”
“Pursuant to Order 54 of the Standing Orders of the Parliament of Ghana, I, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, hereby give notice that, the Seventh Meeting of the Fourth Session of the Eight Parliament of the Fourth Republic shall commence on Monday, the 16th Day of December, 2024 at ten o’clock in the forenoon at a place to be appointed by the Speaker in due course,” Speaker Alban Bagbin declared in a brief notice.
The speaker had shot down calls for a recall from the New Patriotic Party caucus in Parliament after he definitively stated that he would not recall the House until after the election.
In his petition to the speaker, Leader Afenyo-Markin had implored Mr. Babgin to recall Parliament in order to enable the legislature deal with outstanding business he considered urgent.
On their part, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) urged the Speaker to reject Mr. Afenyo-Markin’s petition citing busy schedules of incumbent MPs as they seek reelection.
