Dr. Mark Oliver Kevor, Eastern regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed strong reservations regarding irregularities in the ongoing parliamentary election dispute in the Akwatia constituency.
In a statement addressing the media, Dr. Kevor alleged that 12 ballot boxes in the Akwatia electoral area were found to have been stuffed with foreign ballot papers. These irregularities, he argued, cast serious doubts on the integrity of the election process.
“This is a place where 12 ballot boxes had been found to be stuffed with foreign ballots, foreign ballot papers, 12 of the ballot boxes. And we think this is also critical,” Dr. Kevor said. He emphasized that the outcome of these 12 polling stations could significantly impact the overall result in the Akwatia area.
“The difference between the NPP and the NDC in this election is so close that these 12 polling stations could determine the winner in the Akwatia constituency. For now, no declaration has been made, and collation has not been done at Akwatia,” he noted.
Dr. Kevor called on the Electoral Commission to exclude the disputed ballot boxes from any credible collation in the Akwatia constituency.
Turning his attention to Suhum, another contentious area, Dr. Kevor highlighted ongoing delays in the collation process. According to him, collation in Suhum was postponed due to security concerns, but he urged the Electoral Commission to ensure the process is completed under adequate security arrangements.
“The Suhum constituency collation is still ongoing. The Electoral Commission only postponed it due to security reasons. We have asked the regional police command to make adequate security arrangements for the collation to be completed,” he stated.
The Akwatia parliamentary election has drawn nationwide attention due to its tight margins and allegations of electoral malpractice. Both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are closely monitoring developments, as the resolution of disputes in key polling areas like Akwatia and Suhum could determine the final outcome.
