The Office of the President has issued a final reminder to all outgoing political appointees to return government vehicles in their possession by January 3, 2025.
This directive applies to Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Regional Ministers, Special Assistants, and other officials serving under the current administration.
A statement signed by Director of Communications of the presidency, Eugene Arhin, on December 11, reiterated the policy, prohibiting the acquisition of government vehicles by political appointees.
This policy, first introduced in 2020, remains in effect as President Akufo-Addo completes his second term.
All affected appointees, including those serving on statutory boards and corporations, are required to return their vehicles to the Chief Director of their respective ministries by the specified deadline.
The statement noted, “government vehicles by outgoing Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Regional Ministers and other political appointees at the end of the current administration’s term in office. At the conclusion of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s first term in 2020, a directive was issued prohibiting Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Regional Ministers, Special Assistants, Special Aides to the President and Vice President, and all other political appointees under the Presidential Office Act, 1993 (Act 463) from acquiring government vehicles. This directive remains in full effect as we approach the end of the President’s second and final term.”
“While past administrations have adhered to a convention allowing appointees to acquire one official saloon vehicle through valuation by the State Transport Company Ltd., President Akufo- Addo has reiterated that this practice will not be applicable under his administration. No official vehicle shall be acquired by any appointee of the current administration as the term concludes.”
