The Overlord of the Mamprugu Traditional Kingdom, His Majesty Nayiri Naa Bohaga Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, has broken his silence on the latest wave of attacks and vandalism in the Bawku Traditional Area.
According to him, these acts of lawlessness and terrorism are being perpetrated by criminal elements within the kingdom.
The ongoing conflict has taken a devastating toll. Some schools have remained closed for days, while others operate with minimal attendance under heavy security. Healthcare services have also been severely disrupted, with patients either turned away or transferred to facilities outside the conflict zone.
Speaking to the media, he urged the Mahama-led government to take decisive action to safeguard people travelling along the Bolgatanga to Poulimakom corridor in order to restore Bawku as a hub of commerce.
“The unlawful acts perpetrated by certain Kusasi youth—including assaults, acts of violence against state property, and threats to the lives of security personnel—have greatly alarmed and distressed the peace-loving people of Mamprugu.”
“National efforts to restore Bawku to its rightful status as a hub of commerce and harmony are further threatened by the destabilizing activities of terrorists operating within the Binduri, Pusiga, Garu, and Bawku West Districts, whose actions jeopardize the stability of the entire Northern Corridor.”
His Majesty Nayiri Naa Bohaga Mahami Abdulai Sheriga also stressed that any injustice or attack against a citizen of the Mamprugu Kingdom would compel the kingdom to defend itself.
He further outlined seven recommendations to the government and called on the security services to restore law and order in the Mamprugu Kingdom.
“Increase security personnel and logistics by addressing the concerns raised by the police and military command in Bawku regarding insufficient manpower and resources. Deploying the required number of personnel to maintain law and order, though costly, is a more prudent investment than bearing the far greater cost of insecurity. Ensure that security forces operate without undue political interference, enabling them to pursue and apprehend known criminals who are disrupting the peace,” he added.
