Ministry of Education Deploying Measures to Curb Indiscipline in SHS – Apaak

The Ministry of Education is deploying a series of measures to address the growing rate of indiscipline in Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the country.

The Deputy Education Minister, Dr. Clement Apaak, who made this known in a post on social media on Friday, revealed that the government will empower Parent-Teacher Associations (PTA) to enable schools address disciplinary issues.

He also noted that the Mahama administration intends to  reintroduce routine searches of belongings of students as was the case before the New Patriotic Party (NPP) took office in 2017 and discontinued it.

“The Hon. Minister of Education has, through Ghana Education Service [GES], permitted managements of secondary schools to search students, which was never permitted under the previous government. In addition, PTAs have been restored to what they used to be before 2017. These two policies are only two of many others in the pipeline,” he stated.

Dr. Apaak said the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu had directed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service to begin implementing further interventions with the goal of realizing holistic reforms in the future.

The issue, which he described as “worrying” was a justification for the need for reviewing the Free SHS policy in order to “improve and sustain it,” he held the view.

In recent times, there have been reports on untoward behaviours showed by students in Senior High Schools. Last week, a 16-year-old student of Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School (SHS) in the Ashanti Region was arrested for possessing a locally manufactured gun without lawful authority.

Earlier this week, a video was widely circulated on social media in which a student appeared to be reluctant to tuck his shirt in despite being reprimanded by a teacher.
