The University of Ghana, Legon, has discredited a viral letter questioning the academic qualifications of Malik Basintale, Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), describing the document as fraudulent.
In a statement issued on June 2, 2025, the University firmly rejected claims that Basintale did not graduate from the institution, urging the public to dismiss the reports as false.
The controversy stems from a document widely circulated on social media, allegedly signed by the University’s Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah. The letter, dated May 27, 2025, appeared to be a formal response to a request from the Civil Service Council, claiming that Basintale’s degree could not be verified.
But the University has since distanced itself from the document. The Public Affairs Directorate, in a statement signed by Dr. Elizier Taiba Ameyaw-Buronyah, branded the letter a fabrication.

“The said letter is a forgery and neither the registrar nor any other officer of the University has received it, processed or responded to any such request,” the statement clarified.
UG emphasized that Malik Basintale’s academic status is not in question and described the viral document as part of a broader attempt to mislead the public and damage reputations.
The University also cautioned the public to be vigilant and avoid spreading unverified information, particularly amid rising concerns over the credentials of public officials.
As the debate continues online, many have called for accountability from those behind the forged letter, while others demand full transparency from public institutions on such sensitive matters.
