Supreme Court nominee, Justice Kweku T. Ackaah-Boafo, has firmly denied having any political party affiliation, stressing his commitment to impartiality and judicial integrity.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Friday, June 20, Justice Ackaah-Boafo dismissed claims suggesting he is aligned with any political organization.
“”Let me put it on record that I am not affiliated to any political organization. I’m not affiliated to any business as of now, apart from me being a member of the full gospel businessman fellowship international. But I think impartiality and conflict of interest come in handy if a judge takes the position that his views will be challenged in terms of what is placed before you.”
He stressed that impartiality and conflict of interest are central to the ethical obligations of a judge, citing a personal example to underscore his commitment to fairness.
“Let me put it on record that I actually had an opportunity to write an opinion against my own brother’s law fair. I proposed to the panel that I wanted to recuse because I know my brother. They said, well, but it’s not a personal case. And I happened to write a judgment and he lost.”
According to Justice Ackaah-Boafo, maintaining judicial integrity depends on the judge’s honesty and willingness to step aside when conflicts arise.
“So I think it comes down to one person’s integrity as to whether or not you think you are conflicted. And if you strongly believe so, you must quickly and immediately recuse yourself,” he advised.
