The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has assured stakeholders of government’s commitment to swiftly resolving the ongoing conflict between Asanko Gold Ghana Limited and surrounding communities.
The assurance came during a working visit to the company’s site on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, following recent violent clashes that resulted in the destruction of property and equipment and the death of a local resident on September 9.

The disturbances stemmed from a confrontation between military personnel and local community members who, citing unmet development expectations, encroached on the company’s concession. The incident left Asanko Gold with damages valued at over US$33 million.
Speaking to the company’s leadership, Minister Buah underscored the urgent need for peaceful coexistence.
He emphasized that government would act decisively to address grievances and restore trust between the community and the mining firm.

“As a government, we are committed to getting to the bottom of this matter and ensuring that such a tragedy is not repeated. Dialogue and mutual understanding must prevail,” he said.
As part of his visit, the Minister inspected Asanko Gold’s operations and urged management to strictly comply with mining regulations while prioritizing community engagement and development.
He also visited the family of the deceased, who was the Assembly Member for the area, and expressed condolences on behalf of government.
Minister Buah assured the family and community members of a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident.

The Minister was accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Mr. Isaac Tandoh; Advisor to the Minister, Prof. J.S.Y. Kuma; Chief Inspector of Mines, Kofi Adjei.
The rest were Director of Communications of the Ministry, Mawusi Mawuenyefia; National Coordinator of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP), Ing. Frank Asare; and other officials from the Ministry.
