Gold Smuggling: GoldBod suspends NK Benak Enterprise, orders closure of shops nationwide

The Ghana Gold Board has suspended NK Benak Enterprise’s license and shut down its shops nationwide after linking the company to a major gold smuggling syndicate.

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has suspended the license of NK Benak Enterprise and ordered the closure of all its trading shops nationwide, following revelations that the firm was deeply implicated in one of Ghana’s largest gold smuggling scandals.

In a statement dated Tuesday, September 16, 2025, GoldBod CEO, Sammy Gyamfi Esq., announced that the action stemmed from ongoing investigations that have so far uncovered a criminal network responsible for illegally moving more than 100 kilograms of gold—worth over GH₵100 million—out of the country.

The probe was triggered by a tip-off from a whistleblower, which led to the arrest of Abdul Razak Seidu at Winneba Junction on August 27, 2025, in possession of 9.2 kilograms of unlicensed gold valued at about GH₵10.2 million.

Investigators later traced the network to NK Benak Enterprise, operated by Bernard Nkrumah in Tarkwa, and Rafmoh Gold Ltd, identified as the syndicate’s ringleader.

GoldBod said the syndicate used NK Benak as a conduit to acquire large quantities of gold illegally for smuggling.

Three suspects – Seidu, Nkrumah, and Ibrahim Aremeyaw – have been arraigned before the High Court on charges of facilitating gold smuggling, transporting gold without authorization, and other related offences. Though granted bail, the suspects remain in custody after failing to meet the conditions.

Four additional suspects, including alleged mastermind Rafeeq Mohammed Nandoli (alias Salam), remain on the run. GoldBod, working with the Ghana Police Service, has issued arrest warrants for the fugitives and announced a GH₵1 million bounty for information leading to each arrest.

In the meantime, GoldBod has suspended NK Benak Enterprise’s license, sealed its Tarkwa operations, and shut down Rafmoh Jewelry at Palace Mall in Accra. A compliance directive has been issued to all traders and miners, warning against engaging with the affected companies.

“Notice is hereby given to all licensed traders, miners and the general public to desist from trading and/or engaging in any form of gold transaction with NK Benark Enterprise forthwith,” GoldBod said in its compliance notice, stressing its commitment to accountability and transparency.

GoldBod has encouraged the public to volunteer information through its toll-free lines—0800 44 653 and 0800 44 654—or report directly to the nearest police station.
