Member of Parliament for Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro, Hon. Felix Akwetey Okle, has opened up about the personal sacrifices that come with political leadership, revealing how his commitment to helping constituents often comes at the expense of his own family’s needs.
Speaking on The Verdict on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, hosted by Isaac Addae, Hon. Okle shared that contrary to public perception, many parliamentarians face serious financial pressures despite their positions.
“Sometimes I pay people’s school fees while I haven’t paid my kid’s school fees — though I will pay. I always do that,” he said.
The MP explained that public expectations of politicians are often unrealistic, with many assuming that once someone becomes a Member of Parliament, wealth automatically follows.
“When you become an MP in the morning, everyone assumes you’re rich in the afternoon,” he remarked.
According to Hon. Okle, the constant financial demands from constituents create a false impression that MPs are living comfortably, when in reality, many spend large portions of their income supporting others.
He admitted that the pressures of political life can leave many financially drained after leaving office, but noted that he chooses to give freely because service to others remains his guiding principle.

“I’ve studied politics since I was young, so I know the consequences and repercussions in it. So while I’m spending, I tell people that once they don’t forcibly take the money from me but I give it willingly, I’m okay,” he added.
Hon. Okle emphasized that public service is about compassion and sacrifice, not luxury, urging Ghanaians to understand the human side of leadership.
