Member of Parliament for Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro, Hon. Felix Akwetey Okle, has spoken candidly about the financial sacrifices and realities that come with political life, emphasizing that many politicians end up worse off financially after their time in office.
Speaking on The Verdict, hosted by Issac Addae on Starr 103.5 FM on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, the MP said that the demands of the public often create the perception that parliamentarians are wealthy, even when that is not the case.
“I’ve never spent more than necessary to become an MP. I’m saying so because I’m still spending. It’s something that prepared me into it and I cannot just truncate it,” Hon. Okle explained. “When you become an MP in the morning, everyone assumes you’re rich in the afternoon.”
He added that he frequently supports constituents financially, sometimes even at personal expense. “Sometimes I pay people’s school fees while I haven’t paid my kid’s school fees – though I will pay. I always do that,” he said.

Hon. Okle noted that many politicians are left financially drained after serving in office, contrary to public perception. He attributed this to the constant pressure to assist others, stressing that he chooses to give willingly.
“I’ve studied politics since I was young, so I know the consequences and repercussions in it. So while I’m spending, I tell people that once they don’t forcibly take the money from me but I give it willingly, I’m okay,” he remarked.
