Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has disclosed that the government has so far paid €7 million out of the €50 million required for the reconstruction of the long-delayed La General Hospital project.
Speaking to the media during a tour of the project site on Thursday, October 9, 2025, the Minister explained that approximately €43 million remains outstanding to ensure the full completion of the hospital.
“My records indicate that out of the 50 million euros, about 7 million euros have been paid. Which means that we have about 43 million euros more to pay before the completion of this project,” he said.
He confirmed that the second Interim Payment Certificate (IPC) has been approved and forwarded to the Ministry of Finance to facilitate the release of additional funds for work to resume.
Mr. Akandoh explained that the project currently lacks a dedicated funding source such as a loan or grant, meaning the government must make annual allocations from the national budget.
“In the 2025 budget, we made an allocation of GH¢130 million for this project,” he said.
Originally demolished in 2020 due to structural weaknesses, the La General Hospital has faced years of delays, leaving residents of the La community and surrounding areas without adequate healthcare access.
The Minister, who described the project as one of his key priorities, assured that the contractor is back on site and that the government is committed to completing the facility within the next two years.
“The Ministry of Finance is committed to ensuring that funds are released for this project to progress. I am happy that today I’ve come to see the workers on site. And they are willing to make progress until any payment is made and so we’ll continue to monitor keenly. I have a special interest in this particular project,” he added.
