Private legal practitioner Wayoe Ghanamannti has announced plans to petition Parliament to initiate impeachment proceedings against President John Dramani Mahama for his alleged failure to tackle illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as galamsey.
Ghanamannti argues that the President’s continued inaction on the galamsey issue constitutes a gross dereliction of duty and breaches the oath of office under Article 69 of the 1992 Constitution.
He cites ongoing environmental destruction, contamination of water bodies, and loss of farmland as evidence of Mahama’s neglect in addressing one of Ghana’s most pressing national challenges.
In his forthcoming petition, the lawyer intends to invoke constitutional provisions that empower Parliament to investigate the conduct of the President and, if warranted, take steps toward his removal from office.
“Galamsey has devastated our natural resources and livelihoods across the country, yet the highest office of the land has failed to enforce meaningful interventions. This amounts to a betrayal of public trust and constitutional duty,” Ghanamannti stated.
He emphasized that the move is driven by civic responsibility rather than political motives, aimed at ensuring accountability at the highest level of government.
Once submitted to the Speaker of Parliament, the petition will undergo constitutional scrutiny to determine whether sufficient grounds exist under Article 69 to commence impeachment proceedings.
If approved, this would be one of the rare occasions in Ghanaian history where a sitting President faces potential impeachment for failing to enforce environmental protection laws.
