The Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA) has urged its members to suspend a planned nationwide strike after the Government of Ghana initiated urgent dialogue to address outstanding payment challenges confronting waste management companies.
In a statement released on Friday, ESPA confirmed that the Minister for Local Government and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ibrahim Ahmed, had engaged the Association’s leadership, assuring them of the government’s commitment to process and settle arrears owed to service providers “within the shortest possible time.”
The discussions, according to ESPA, will also create an avenue for both sides to explore sustainable policy and funding mechanisms to support the waste management sector in the long term.
The Association had earlier announced a strike scheduled for November 7, citing severe financial constraints resulting from delayed payments. However, following renewed government assurances, ESPA’s National Executive Council has advised all member companies to continue normal operations.
“We strongly advise that members continue their normal operations in spite of the daunting challenges,” the statement signed by Executive Secretary Ama Ofori Antwi said, adding that leadership is working closely with the government toward “a firm and mutually beneficial resolution of the impasse.”

ESPA commended service providers for their patience and for maintaining essential sanitation services despite the difficulties. The Association expressed confidence that ongoing negotiations will help stabilise the sector and protect the livelihoods of thousands of workers as well as the environment.
Members were encouraged to remain calm, united, and to avoid any actions that could disrupt waste collection and sanitation services while talks continue.
ESPA reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the interests of all members and ensuring the continuous, efficient functioning of Ghana’s waste management infrastructure.
