DVLA Boss denies claims of unilateral award of number plate contract

DVLA CEO Julius Neequaye Kotey denies awarding the new number plate embossment contract unilaterally, saying it was awarded before his tenure and attempts to collaborate with VEMAG failed.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Julius Neequaye Kotey, has denied allegations by the Vehicle Embossment Association of Ghana (VEMAG) that he single-handedly awarded a contract for the embossment of the new vehicle number plates.

VEMAG, which has taken the matter to court, claims the decision could lead to the loss of jobs for more than 3,000 of its members.

However, speaking to the media, Mr. Kotey clarified that the contract in question was awarded in 2024, before he assumed office as DVLA CEO.

He explained that upon taking office, he personally initiated efforts to link VEMAG’s leadership with the company that won the contract, with the aim of fostering collaboration.

According to him, those efforts failed due to capacity constraints on the part of VEMAG.

Mr. Kotey further accused the association of attempting to sabotage the operations of the DVLA by allegedly warning its members against embossing number plates for the Authority this year, a move he suggested was aimed at getting him removed from office.
