The Ministry of Education has issued a stern warning against attacks on teachers, emphasizing that any assault on educators will not be tolerated and will be met with severe legal action.
In a statement signed by Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, Deputy Minister for Education, the Ministry said it is committed to protecting teachers and ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable under Ghanaian law.
The statement highlighted several recent cases of violence against teachers. At Kade Senior High Technical School, students who assaulted a teacher were arrested, arraigned, and convicted of conspiracy and assault.
During a Super Zonal Sports Competition in the Eastern Region, incidents including stabbing and alleged sexual assault were reported; the accused are now in police custody while the victims receive medical and psychosocial support.
Similarly, at West Africa Senior High School, two students and an accomplice have been remanded for six weeks pending further court proceedings after assaulting a teacher.
The Ministry aligned itself with President John Dramani Mahama’s remarks at the 54th Ghana National Association of Teachers Delegates Conference, where he stressed that attacks on educators are unacceptable.
Dr. Apaak noted, “Our focus is not only on condemning violent acts but also on ensuring justice for victims through the legal system. We will work closely with law enforcement and the judiciary to prevent further incidents.”
The Ministry called on school authorities, students, and communities to support efforts to safeguard teachers and maintain a safe learning environment.
